general information

Welcome to Athens, Greece, host city of the Research and Innovation Matchmaking Event 2026. We look forward to welcoming participants from across Europe for two days of networking, collaboration and innovation activities.

Currency

The official currency in Greece is the Euro (€ / EUR).

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, cafés and shops. ATMs are available throughout Athens and at the airport.

Participants are advised to carry a small amount of cash for taxis, kiosks or small local purchases.

Timezone

Greece operates in the:

Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) – UTC/GMT +3

Please note that Athens is one hour ahead of most Central European countries during June.

Language

The official language is Greek.

However, English is widely spoken, particularly in:

  • hotels 
  • restaurants 
  • public transport services 
  • tourist areas 
  • conference and business environments 

Most event staff and organisers will communicate in English.

Emergency Numbers

In case of emergency, the following numbers are available throughout Greece:

  • 112 – European Emergency Number 
  • 100 – Police 
  • 166 – Ambulance / Medical Emergency 
  • 199 – Fire Brigade 

The European emergency number 112 operates 24/7 and supports multiple languages.

Weather in June

Athens in June is typically warm and sunny.

Average temperatures:

  • Daytime: 28–33°C 
  • Evening: 20–24°C 

Participants are encouraged to:

  • wear light business or smart casual clothing 
  • stay hydrated 
  • use sunscreen during outdoor activities 

Conference venues and hotels are air-conditioned.

Electricity & Power Plugs

Greece uses:

  • 230V supply voltage 
  • Type C and Type F plugs 

Participants travelling from outside Europe may require a travel adapter.

Transportation in Athens

Athens offers several transportation options:

  • Metro 
  • Bus 
  • Tram 
  • Taxi 
  • Ride-sharing applications 

The Athens Metro provides direct access from Athens International Airport to the city centre.

Taxi fares from the airport to central Athens are fixed-rate depending on time of day.

Useful Advice for International Participants

  • Carry identification documents at all times. 
  • Keep valuables secure in crowded public areas. 
  • Allow additional travel time during peak traffic hours. 
  • June is a busy tourism period in Athens, so early hotel and transport arrangements are recommended.
